Distracted Driver Causes Deadly Bicycle Accident in Longmont, Kills 8-Year-Old Girl

On the heels of a fatal bike crash in Weld County, another life has been tragically taken in a deadly bicycle accident – with the latest victim being an 8-year-old girl.

According to Longmont investigators, this fatal crash took place just after 3:20pm on Friday, May 20th as the young victim, who was riding alongside her father after school, approached an intersection. Although the riders reportedly had a green light to cross the street, a 20-year-old motorist in a pickup truck proceeded to make a right on red, striking the young girl.

As the police report explains, the pickup truck driver was distracted by oncoming traffic and failed to check the crosswalk before making the turn. He did remain at the accident scene and has reportedly been cooperative with the investigation.

Although emergency responders attempted to revive the girl via CPR, she ultimately passed away after being transported to Longmont United Hospital.

Criminal charges have not been filed against the truck driver, but they remain a possibility, as investigators continue to look into:

  • Whether alcohol and/or drug impairment was a factor – Blood test results for the pickup truck driver are still pending.
  • The intersection light sequencing
  • Witness accounts related to this deadly crash.

As more news about this pending investigation becomes available, we’ll report the latest findings to you here, in an upcoming blog.
