Latest News and Advancements in Brain-Computer Interface

Brain-computer interface (BCI) creates collaboration between the brain and a mechanism, allowing a patient’s brain to send a message to perform an activity outside the body, such as moving a computer cursor or an artificial limb.

In 2006, researchers developed technology that allowed a paralyzed man to control a cursor on a computer screen with his mind. Brown University researchers working on a study called Brain Gate later used an implanted brain chip system that allowed a paralyzed patient suffering from quadriplegia to move a robotic arm with her mind.

These technologies required a device placed on top of the head, but Brown researchers in March 2013 developed a wireless rechargeable and implantable BCI. They tested the wireless devices on pigs and monkeys and planned to test human subjects next.

Paralyzed patients may be able to perform everyday tasks on a regular basis, including tasks such as drinking, eating or simply scratching their noses.

How does a brain chip system work?

A brain chip is implanted into the motor cortex area of the brain.The motor cortex controls movement. The brain chip system operates via collaboration between three components:

  • a sensor implanted in the brain;
  • a decoder; and
  • assistive technology.

A decoder like a computer decodes the message from the brain and relays the information to the assistive technology to instruct it what to do. The result? The system allows the person to stimulate movement in a source outside of the body, simply by thinking ofthe movement.

So what does this mean right now for those paralyzed in an accident?

What does this mean for paralysis patients in Colorado?

While the technology of a BCI system offers exciting possibilities for paralysis patients, the use is mostly experimental at this stage and still would be cost prohibitive to many people.

However, if you or a loved one has suffered a brain or spinal cord injury that resulted in paralysis, you may be able to collect damages for the many costs you’ve incurred, including those for medical bills. While it may not cover BCI, it can cover other necessary medical treatment and long-term care, and patients should discuss the extent of medical technology that a personal injury lawsuit or claim might cover.

Patients alsoshould discuss with their doctors the types of technologies that may benefit them.

How do I collect damages in Colorado?

Collecting damages means proving negligence on the part of another party. This means providing adequate evidence of negligence and demonstrating the extent of damages. Because these are serious injuries requiring long-term care, it’s important to discuss the case with an attorney who can help patients and their families pursue fair compensation.
